✦  About the studio

We build software
soft-spoken.

yuru ゆる is a Japanese word often translated as loose, relaxed, or unhurried. We chose it because it describes the kind of software we want to make: things that feel calm to use, that don't shout for attention, that respect the person in front of the screen.

We are an independent design and software studio based in Malaysia. We are small on purpose. We take on one or two engagements at a time, and we ship our own products in the gaps between. We do not outsource. We do not subcontract. The person you write to is the person who designs and builds the thing.

What we do

We design and build small, well-considered web products. That usually looks like one of three things:

  • Product design & build — short engagements, typically four to ten weeks, where we take a founder's rough idea and turn it into a real, shippable web app. Design, frontend, backend, deployment. One studio, one bill.
  • Brand & marketing surfaces — landing pages, identity systems, and the small editorial touches that make a product feel like it was made by someone who cared.
  • In-house products — tools we build for ourselves and then let other people use. JuuLinkAI is the first.

How we work

We start every project with a long conversation. Not a discovery workshop, not a brief — just a conversation, usually over a video call, sometimes over coffee. We want to understand the thing you are trying to make, why you are trying to make it, and who you are trying to make it for. Most of our best decisions come out of that first hour.

Then we design in the browser. We sketch on paper, jump to code quickly, and treat early prototypes as the thinking — not the deliverable. We share progress in plain English, not status reports. We push to a live URL as early as the second day of an engagement.

We keep the surface area small. Most software products fail by adding too much, not too little. We push back on features that do not earn their weight. We will sometimes recommend that you do not build a thing — and we will do that even when building it is the easier sale for us.

What we believe

Software should feel like good service. A good waiter anticipates, then steps back. A good interface does the same. Loading spinners are a failure of imagination. Notifications are a tax on someone's attention — we charge them sparingly.

Negative space is content. The empty parts of a page do work. They give the eye somewhere to rest, they suggest hierarchy, they signal confidence. We design for the gaps as deliberately as we design for the marks.

Less, but better. Dieter Rams said it forty years ago and it has not aged. We would rather ship three things that are right than ten things that are fine.

Who is behind it

yuru is operated by Yuru Software Design, a registered design and software practice in Malaysia. The studio is small — a designer who codes, working with a rotating bench of trusted collaborators when a project needs more hands. We are available for new work on a selective basis. If our approach resonates with what you are trying to make, say hello.
